Here is a woodpecker that I saw in my neighborhood this afternoon.
This is a Red-Bellied Woodpecker. If you were to see it up close, you would notice that on the breast it looks like it got too close to paint that was not quite dry. Hence red-bellied. (A redheaded woodpecker has an all black back.) On the red-bellied woodpecker, if the red head comes clear down to the beak, it is the male. If it only comes toward the beak part way, it is the female.
Hi Darlene: Thanks for the information on the woodpecker! I am really enjoying watching and hearing this woodpecker. Yesterday, I stood under the tree in question, and the woodpecker dropped little bits of wood shavings down onto me.
